I developed swelling in the back of my right elbow three months ago. The only pain I have is when I lean my elbow on the center console when driving my car. I have stopped playing tennis and have iced my elbow daily. This does not seem to have reduced my swelling. What can I do?

Your description of local swelling in the back of the elbow is commonly known as olecranon bursitis. The olecranon is the pointed end of the bone in the back of your elbow. It has an overlying sac of tissue called a bursa, which helps pad the bony prominent surface. This bursa can become inflamed and fill with fluid. In most instances, the swelling will subside in a few weeks with anti-inflammatory medication and reduction of any repeated trauma or friction, such as tennis or leaning on your elbow. while driving. Consider evaluation by a doctor and removal of the fluid by a needle aspiration.
