Can I in-line skate with a screw in my wrist or should I have it removed? PDF Print E-mail

My friends have persuaded me to in-line skate for exercise. I have had several friends get wrist injuries from in-line skating. I am concerned because I have a single screw in my wrist from an operation to fix a broken bone 12 years ago. I have no pain, nor can I feel the screw in my wrist. Can I in-line skate with a screw in my wrist or should I have it removed?

The screw was put in your wrist to support the broken bone until it mended. The bone no longer requires the screw for support since it has healed. The screw now serves as an internal splint. Given a second injury with substantial force, another broken bone can result. However, the use of proper wrist guards can reduce the risk of wrist injuries in in-line skaters. I would advise the use of protective gear. I would not advise an operation to remove the screw since you have no symptoms. ?
